Other Frequently Asked Questions

Is a federal criminal search the same thing as a national criminal check?

No, a federal criminal search will check US Federal District courts for crimes such as drug trafficking across state lines, computer fraud & hacking, or forgery.

Why does your report say that you provide criminal information for a minimum of seven years?

We report criminal results for a minimum of seven years and will report more as long as it is within the laws of the governing state. Check with your Genesis Representative if you are unsure of the laws of your state.

Do you provide nationwide searches?

Yes, we provide the PowerhouseTM, which includes a search of various records such as county and state criminal databases, sex offender registries, fugitive lists, and more throughout the United States.  Database searches are frequently referred to in the industry as a “nationwide search.”

What are the extra fees that I have to pay?

Each state, county, and local municipality has the ability to pass laws that require a fee to be paid in order to access court records and driving records. Furthermore, employers and education institutions often use third party services to complete requests for verification, and those third party companies will charge a fee for accessing their data. We make every attempt to keep you informed of changes in fees in advance, and any fees incurred are passed straight through to you. The probability of incurring fees is actually quite low.

What’s the value of a county level criminal search when a statewide or national criminal check is available?

National searches cast a wide net, but do not cover every county in every state. It is better to perform county searches where the applicant has resided in the last seven years so that you obtain only the most accurate and up-to-date records.

Why do some searches take longer than the average 3 business days?

Our average turn-around time on background screening reports is less than 3 business days, with most searches completed on the same day that they are ordered. When a report takes more than 3 business days, there are usually issues at the county courthouse that are out of our control. These issues could be foul weather, court closures, staffing reductions at the courthouse, damaged records files, or any other issues at the court level. It is up to each court and its clerks to determine how quickly the results are returned. Genesis Background Screening Services does our absolute best to compile data of courts and jurisdictions where there are known turnaround delays and notify our clients or all potential delays.

Does your company provide assistance with questions pertaining to legal issues?

Genesis Background Screening Services does not employ legal staff and therefore, does not give legal advice to our clients.

Can your company service organizations with multiple locations?

The friendly team at Genesis is experienced with providing background screening solutions nationwide.

Can I order a workers’ compensation history search on someone at any time?

Workers’ compensation searches may only be ordered post-hire, and there are very specific guidelines that must be adhered to regarding the use of any of the information revealed in the search. Please consult an attorney if you believe your company may be interested in ordering these searches.
