During the Trump campaign, there was a lot of discussion about minimizing federal business regulations, so it would not be surprising to see some sweeping changes during his presidency. While this may create some relief for organizations, it could put quite a burden on HR departments to monitor regulations in each state in which their business operates.
Here are some questions that will be of concern to employers:
Skill Shortages – If Trump reverses some of the off-shoring that has occurred and brings jobs back, will employers be able to find workers with the skills they need? Will employers need to increase their training investment to rebuild their workforce?
Health Insurance – if ACA (Affordable Care Act) is repealed, what will take its place, how much will it cost, will it be adequate and how will it affect employees?
Minimum Wage – Will minimum wage increase or will there be tax breaks instead?
FLSA Overtime Rules – Although the new overtime rules were set to start on December 1, 2016, a federal judge in Texas issued a nationwide injunction temporarily blocking this regulation. Since this is not a final ruling, how will this play out?
Paid Family and Medical Leave – For working mothers, Trump supports 6 weeks of paid maternity leave. Will fathers or parents that adopt be included?
Equal Pay For Equal Work – Trump has not supported policies for pay equity at the federal level, so will we see anything pass for equal pay for equal work?
These questions are only a small list, there will be more in the coming months as we watch how the new administration addresses business regulations and how it affects your workforce.
