Great Employee Experience Pays Off!
Most employers pay lots of attention to customer experience, but making employee experience a priority is a more recent development. Old school thinking is that employees are lucky to have a job no matter what their work environment is. After all, most of us need to make a living and unemployment was high for a long time. Many employers were not concerned about employee satisfaction with the workplace. Anyone who quit had several people in the wings waiting to take their job when it became available.
Well, the power has shifted
Unemployment is low and job seekers are no longer afraid to change jobs, especially millennials. With technology, multiple opportunities are available for new ways to start a small business or connect with headhunters. Good employees with the talent and skills you need are in high demand and you have to compete with other companies to get and keep them. A key component to achieving that goal is employee experience.
Employee experience starts before the first interview This topic is covered in our previous blog, Is Your Company Struggling To find Talent? but this blog is about the physical space in the office and how it impacts your employees. With WIFI and co-working spaces, it’s possible to work from almost anywhere, but offices are still a major work location. However, traditional design of office space that contains a bunch of cubicles is being reevaluated.
Large companies like Apple, Linkedin, Salesforce and Amazon are redesigning the physical workspaces they provide for employees. This isn’t just to have a beautiful modern office, it’s a strategy to stay competitive. It’s an investment to attract and retain a more productive workforce by creating a better employee experience.
Planning a completely new workspace?
There are savvy designers that can help you with an optimal plan. The plan should consider the different needs people have during their work day and individual preferences for an ideal workspace. People are energized and motivated differently to be their most productive. Having areas for collaborative work, but also quiet space for focus gives employees options during their work day. Flexibility to change spaces as personnel or workflow changes is key to optimal employee experience over the long term.
Established office, small budget?
What if your office is already set up in a more traditional way and you don’t have budget for a major redesign? First look at your office with fresh eyes to see what could be improved. Choose a few employees that are a good representation of your staff to be your office update team. Task them with talking to employees about what they like about the office and what they think would improve their work life. Once they have compiled their notes, you will likely see a pattern emerging. Items that are stated the most are where your limited budget makes the most impact on employee experience.
Even if you can’t change your office space much, there are other options to help boost employee experience. Some flexibility with hours and offsite work options may bring in new energy along with appreciation of trust from the company and the opportunity to have some autonomy.Aside from the physical work environment, another way to improve employee experience is hiring the right people!
