On Time or Fashionably Late?
Maybe in your personal life you like to make an entrance and that means not being the first to arrive. However, in business, being on time matters. A lot.
Any time you are late for a business meeting
Being late sets up a negative scenario right from the start. If you have kept someone waiting (BTW, someone who was there on time), you are already operating from a disadvantage. On a sales meeting? Being late makes you look unreliable and disrespectful of the other person’s time. If you can’t even show up on time, how will they trust doing business with you?
Are you a WIIFM (what’s in it for me) kind of person?
It’s beneficial for you to be on time. You could have precious minutes to go over your notes and be relaxed and ready by the time you sit down with your potential customer. Being on time is a priority for professional behavior, no matter what level you are at in your career.
Are you on time or do you sneak into company meetings late?
First, chances are they delayed starting the meeting on time waiting for stragglers to show up. In case you didn’t know, this practice is really annoying to people that made the effort to be there on time. Second, it is likely that now the presenter will need to circle back to some information that has already been covered to bring the late people up to speed. The old adage that time is money is true. If you aren’t on time, it could look like you are stealing from the company. Not a good look if you hope to grow in your career.
And even in your personal life
If you are chronically late, you are probably an annoyance to your friends. They may tolerate it because they care about you, but I can pretty much guarantee that it is a thorn in your relationship. My pet peeve: people who designate the time themselves and then still can’t arrive on time! With the technology we have now, it’s hard to have any plausible excuse anymore for being late.
Although It doesn’t come naturally to everyone to be on time, it is a practice that is in your control. It’s an easy way to impress people and show you have integrity. It takes a little planning, but you can show how reliable and dependable you are by being punctual. You will also notice that you feel much less stress when you are on time. Think of the consequences you have experienced from being late and frazzled. Now visualize arriving somewhere on time or early enough that you can relax and feel in control.
