Does your company have workplace zombies?
Have you ever thought that maybe some of your employees have become workplace zombies?
What are workplace zombies?
Workplace zombies are employees that are walking through their day with low productivity and little to no engagement. They are doing as little as possible to get their paycheck and not get fired.
They provide poor customer service, create attendance problems, cause high turnover, spread negativity, low productivity and are a danger to your company’s reputation.
Consider these facts:
- Employees who don’t feel heard, valued or respected are working at low capacity
- Low team engagement creates less productivity
- More than 60% of employees are burned out in their job
- Disengaged workers cost U.S. companies over 500 billion dollars a year!
How can you help your employees be more engaged and empowered instead of being workplace zombies?
One of the things you can do is eliminate the “multi-task” mindset that so many managers love They think it is efficient to rip employees’ brains from one task to another during the workday. Some people may thrive on this chaotic way of working, but most do not. The brain can truly only be focused on one thing at a time. Productivity can be reduced a lot when people have to switch tasks.
Speaking from my own personal work style,
If left alone with my tasks, I can accomplish a lot of work. I have the ability to focus to the point of eliminating all distractions with total concentration. Not only do I accomplish my best work this way, but it creates job satisfaction. I also notice less fatigue at the end of the day.
However, if interrupted and pulled into different directions, my brain starts to become inefficient and tired. I can no longer concentrate or get deep into my work. At the end of the day, I realize that I accomplished very little and my job satisfaction is very low. Too many of these days starts leading to burnout.
More ways to help your zombies to become more productive
Set realistic goals that your employees can reach and then celebrate successes. Create recognition programs that consistently spotlights good work. Encourage your employees to be involved in the big picture of the company and relate their work to its success. Help them to learn good time management skills, give clear goals and encourage them to be self-directing. Then stand back and watch them succeed!
