Is Rest and Renewal Part of Your Workday?
A colleague of mine that was having a bad day told me something that has stayed with me for over 20 years. She said, “With the right health, motivation and training almost anyone can run a marathon, but not every day!” Of course, she said this in utter despair at the time because her job was running her into the ground. However, it made me realize how often we just keep racing through our day without giving our bodies and minds rest and renewal breaks.
Rest and renewal or multi-tasking?
We all have our patterns of energy and productivity. Whether your job is on a rigid schedule or has flexibility, using your pattern to thrive at work should always include rest and renewal breaks throughout the day.
As many companies have decreased their staff, more and more employees have had to figure out how to do more with less time and resources. Enter in the tired old term that is used in job descriptions constantly –multi-tasking. Do you pride yourself on being able to do multiple things at once? In case you didn’t know, none of us can actually do more than one thing at a time. You can move back and forth between tasks. However, you can’t truly focus on them all at the same time. So really, multi-tasking is likely a result of poor planning instead of an accomplishment.
Building rest and renewal into your day
In the short term, working without rest and renewal may work for a while. But if you use sports as an analogy, the best athletes build rest and renewal into their routines. They know that it is not sustainable to keep pushing without allowing for recovery time.
Want to be your most productive and creative? You will need to break up your intense work pace with periods of rest and renewal to recharge your body and mind. Don’t tell yourself you will rest when you get caught up. Instead rest first and see how much easier it will be to get caught up!
